After almost 2 years, the ‘Chaos Queen’ is back! That’s right, a new season of XO, Kitty was announced in November 2024 and premiered in January 2025. This season continues the journey of Kathrine ‘Kitty’ Song-Covey, played by actress Anna Cathcart, as she returns to KISS to finish her 2nd semester. This season introduces 3 new characters, 2 guest appearances, new drama, and possibly new love interests.
XO, Kitty is a romantic comedy spin-off of Jenny Han’s other work, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, which follows Kitty’s sister, Lara Jean. It was adapted into a movie trilogy series that premiered on Netflix. It has gained lots of praise as it explored not only teenage experiences like first loves and love triangles, but also cultural identity and heartfelt storytelling. Jenny Han serves as the executive producer and writer of the show. The first season of XO, Kitty premiered on May 18, 2023, and was renewed for a second season in June 2023. Season 2 of XO, Kitty premiered January 16, 2025, and it was recently announced on Valentine’s Day that the show has been renewed for a third season!
Season one starts with Kitty wanting to travel to Korea to attend an international school called KISS, short for Korean Independent School of Seoul, to surprise her long-distance boyfriend, Daeheon ‘Dae’ Kim, and also learn more about her late mother’s heritage. The season unravels new challenges for Kitty and a brand new adventure as she tries to navigate a new culture and adjust to a different country. The show very much includes lots of LGBTQ+ representation and identity within Kitty and other characters. The season has 10 episodes in total.
Season two begins with Kitty coming back to KISS after getting kicked out for staying in the boy’s dorm the previous semester. She vows to not get herself into any more trouble this semester, but unfortunately for her, wherever she goes, chaos follows. The season focuses on Kitty exploring her sexuality more and continuing to find out more about her mother’s side of the family. The introduction of new characters, one being a villain, keeps the audience engaged in the fast-paced plotline. The season is emotional, funny, heartfelt, and more colorful, aesthetic-wise compared to last season. Unfortunately, the season is 2 episodes short, only having 8 episodes in total.
Some may argue that XO, Kitty is a huge “cringe-fest” and a hard watch, others will argue that the cringe is what makes it so good, and season two was way better than season one. If XO, Kitty isn’t your cup of tea, that’s perfectly fine. Either way, many people enjoyed the new season and shipwars have even blossomed over whether Kitty should end up with Minho or Yuri. It keeps fans engaged and they’re excited and impatiently waiting for season three!
