The importance of a mask
April 8, 2020
The CDC has released a statement stating that it is highly recommended people begin wearing cloth mouth covering and masks. Along with the social distancing guidelines, wearing a cloth mask will also slow down the spread of COVID-19, especially in settings such as going to the store, banks, pharmacies, etc. This is essential since, for some, COVID-19 does not necessarily show symptoms. For the general public, they should use the cloth masks rather than any surgical mask, as those should be saved for healthcare workers.
The CDC has recommended that the cloth mask has many layers and cover the mouth. The mask shouldn’t be worn by anyone under two years of age, or anyone with respiratory problems. The cloth masks should be washed regularly, throwing it in a washing machine has been approved as a way to sterilize it. The masks should have loops for around the ears or to tie behind the head.
When removing your mask after going out, you should avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose. After removing it, you should immediately wash your hands without touching the mask again before sterilizing.
There are many ways to make cloth masks at home, some remedies use sewing and others don’t. For more information on how to make your own cloth mask, check out “Use of Cloth Face Coverings to Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19” from the CDC website.
