B.S.U, also known as the black student union, is a club where students get together as one and speak about black excellence. It creates a safe and comfortable environment for students who are in the club. The B.S.U Club started to create a safe space for students to be able to express themself and to learn more about culture and more life lessons.
This club has a profound impact on its members, providing a sense of community and connection that extends beyond the club. By empowering Black students to take pride in their identity and culture, the club helps to build confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills.
Vice president Junior Messiah Lee, speaks about the belief and understanding of the club. “ We believe in helping everyone fit in and learn different things about black culture.” Lee then adds “ I want people to understand that B.S.U isn’t just a club for African Americans but it is in fact open to all. It’s important to learn about the black culture not only for African Americans but for everyone as well.”
While speaking with some members of black student union club Nevaeh Walker says “a word to describe this club is ‘cultural’, because these clubs give us an opportunity to spend time and learn about African American and get a chance to bond with those who share similar backgrounds.”
Aside from the cultural talks the B.S.U club does fun activities such as games and guest talks. While looking into the future the club B.S.U plans on adding more activities such as having more guest speakers, more field trips and having amazing cookouts!
B.S.U meets every other Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:30 pm. Not only are the activities fun , it also creates a safe and comfortable environment for students who attend Joliet West High school.
