Many students in Joliet West have found interest in making music. There is one major issue, though. Many students are unsure of where to start, or how to play music properly. This is a good start to any percussion student, and it is meant to demonstrate how to drum properly. First of all, a drum or a drum pad is recommended when drumming. Owning a pair of drumsticks is required, and it’s important to start holding them with all fingers, but want make sure to leave around an inch and a half of the drumstick hanging out from the bottom of the hand. Make sure to hold the drumstick firmly while keeping a pointer finger and thumb to ensure that the drumstick isn’t going anywhere, make sure the fingers are supporting the drumstick without firmly gripping onto it.
It is important to make sure that the drumsticks have room to breathe throughout other fingers apart from pointer and thumb. Try to aim for a rebound stroke when hitting the drum to get a better sound, and practice it with both hands. To the people that are new, something that beginners should first work on is eight on a hand. Eight on a hand is where students hit the drum with each stick eight times. First, hit the drum with the right hand eight times, then on the left hand eight times. Try doing eight on a hand, manage to loosen up firm grip on sticks, because it is important to play with ease in order to make the drum sound more vibrant.
An important thing to recognize while drumming is that students should be playing in the middle of the drum. The middle of the drum is where people are going to get the best sound. Make sure the sticks are not sliding up and down in the hands while drumming, the thumb should have to hold the stick in place in order to restrain the stick from going anywhere. Last but not least, swing the sticks high in the air, and don’t be afraid to mess up. Messing up is necessary in order to get better, and it is okay to make mistakes. If attempting to play, at least play with confidence, and enjoy yourself.
