Joliet West showed its wild side during Homecoming 2010. The “born to be wild” theme was a great way to boost school spirit and get everyone ready for the year ahead of them. Homecoming was full of activities including spirit week theme days, the powder puff game, pep assembly, varsity homecoming game, and the dance to bring everything to a close.
Despite the fact that spirit week fell on the same week as pictures, it was a success. Students showed their school spirit during the theme days by wearing college attire, crazy hair/mismatch clothes, animal print, band gear (nerd day for some seniors), and their class colors. While most days had decent turnouts, mismatch day was by far the favorite. It was nearly impossible to get through the hallways that day because of students stopping to see everyone else’s outfits.
On Wednesday, September 22, the bleachers were full of people cheering on the junior and senior powder puff teams. It was a close game but with a final of 14-12, the juniors took the win. It was a historical victory since it was the third time in school history that the juniors have won. The male poms squad gave an entertaining performance during halftime, which was repeated at Friday’s pep assembly.
During the varsity football game that Saturday, the Tigers lost to the Bolingbrook Raiders. Joliet tied up the game seconds before halftime but couldn’t achieve a homecoming victory. The final score was 32-20.
The highly anticipated homecoming dance was from 6:30 to 9:30 on September 25. The sold out dance nicely highlighted the “born to be wild” theme. Cups of animal crackers were provided as snacks and an elaborate jungle balloon scene completed the decorations in the cafeteria.
Homecoming 2010 was proof that the Tigers truly were born to be wild.
