As of this year, President Joe Biden announced that there will be another round of federal student debt forgiveness as a part of the Biden-Harris Administration. On October 4, it was officially announced that roughly $9 billion more will be distributed to those who applied and were approved to receive the help with student debt and loans. Student debt has been an increasing issue as costs continue to rise in the United States, and many who went to college are having issues paying back the debt.
While resources have been out for citizens, many have not been able to receive the benefits previously. However, with Biden’s new plan, it’s geared towards lower and middle-class families, who are struggling more to pay back those debts. Many have questioned the efforts but there is a difference being made, “For years, millions of eligible borrowers were unable to access the student debt relief they qualified for, but that’s all changed thanks to President Biden and this Administration’s relentless efforts to fix the broken student loan system,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.
During Biden’s time in office one of his goals has been to relieve debt, and the Biden administration overall has forgiven around $127 billion in debt, and that is around 3.6 million people. Despite the supreme court trying to limit the amount and make cut backs, he is not stopping, trying to find ways to keep helping those with debt. He states “ … his administration will attempt to deliver a different loan forgiveness program under the Higher Education Act, a 1965 law.”
Some of the student views lay not in the student debt and forgiveness, but to the point that it’s had gotten this far, and the issues with inflation and overall costs rising within the years. There’s efforts that are continually being made in order to work towards minimizing the inflation issue. Others however question why the money is being given towards student debt and not other issues going on in the country, this though has been a focus of Biden throughout his presidency
Overall, this effort has gone noticed as the people receiving the benefits from the plan have gone to millions of americans. The efforts will continue throughout this presidency, and will keep changing lives the longer the program is supported.
