The Joliet Police Department has been sued for raiding the wrong home, which has been a recurring problem and hasn’t seemed to have any improvement. The police raided a home with a Grandmother and 4 grandchildren. These officers had the warrant for Elian Raya, who was involved in a crime of killing two 22-year-olds at a Halloween party. The police pushed through the grandmothers house with no warrant, and wrecked the house, pulling up mattresses and pulling clothes out of drawers. The lawsuit is basing it off of the effect the raid had on the families mental health, the police officers didn’t allow the grandmother, named Adela Carrasco to go to the bathroom to get her inhaler.
Carrasco states “I asked them to show me a warrant, they didn’t show me nothing. They just pushed me aside and went in.” It has been proved the warrant they had was for the house directly next to theirs. Carrasco lives at 228 Comstock street, the warrant was for Raya who lived at 226 Comstock street.
The lawsuit includes the family accusing the officers of waking the 4 grandchildren up with orders such as “Don’t move [expletive]!!!! Put your [expletive] hands up!!!” As the grandkids didn’t do anything wrong and this is the wrong home this could be detrimental to their mental health, causing PTSD etc.
The police department has yet to make comments on how they could have affected these children and their mental health. As they found they had the wrong home, they moved to the correct home but kept Carrasco and her grandchildren hostage in their home for 4-6 hours.
