The Girl’s Bowling team at West continues to amaze the community by their countless wins and dedication. Last year the team made it to state and was second runner up to Lockport High School. This year, the girls wanted to build onto that success and have a very memorable season.
Varsity captain senior Gracie French had a lot to say regarding the bowling program at West, much about how there is a lot more to competitive bowling than it seems. Against different schools and teams, there are one on one matches between the girls. It is a series of 3 games and the top 6 girls receive points. The top girl receives 6, the second 5, and so on. The team wins are based on the amount of points their players have earned in respect to the other team. The teams eventually get rankings, which based on their wins, the girls have the possibility to go to Regionals, Conference, Sectionals, and then State. French stated that she is “fully confident” in her and her teammates’ capabilities to make state this season. She wants her and her teammates to continue “picking each other up when we encounter the challenges,” which is admittedly always a struggle with applied pressure from other teams. For a couple more weeks, the team will finish up with Conference and a few select invites, and then they are onto Regionals, Sectionals, and hopefully State.
As captain of the Varsity team, French stated their base is good friendships and chemistry as teammates and that she feels the team has a “really good shot and it’s gonna be one last great season.” On the outside looking in, competitive bowling is a complex sport, and at West, the girls have mastered it and will achieve their goals.
