In the past months, there has been a trend of hurricanes and tropical storms in Florida. Although there are tons of people theorizing things like someone making the ocean angry, or stealing an ancient artifact, in reality it is much more simple than that-well kind of. Florida, also known as ‘the sunshine state,’ has always been more prone to tropical storms due to the state’s geographic location.
However, recently these storms and conditions have worsened. The reasoning behind this is human caused-global warming. According to the Environmental Defense Fund “Hurricanes are becoming stronger and faster. They are less predictable and more dangerous.” Because of this, people are unable to prepare as well as they used to, which causes large amounts of destruction and grief. On September 26th, Hurricane Helene made its way to Florida. Not even two weeks later, Hurricane Milton struck the West Coast of Florida. Hurricane Milton was originally expected to be a category five hurricane, But by the time it hit land it was down to a three.
Nevertheless, Helene still brought mass destruction. The hurricane produced 35+ preliminary tornado reports and fabricated 126 tornado warnings. Helene was considered ‘wetter’ and wind speeds were 11% higher due to climate change. According to news station Al Jazeera, “a major factor, experts say, is the ocean’s warming temperatures. Which serves as turbo fuel for brewing storms in the Atlantic ocean.” This is believable with the damage that was done.
Millions of people across Florida experienced power outages, deadly amounts of flooding, and even some roads being completely washed away.
