As many of you in the student body have noticed, the tiger statue by the auditorium is getting a makeover. The reason behind it is that Dante Dibartolo, who created the Tiger statue at the field, is painting the Auditorium tiger to match the current colors. Some students are confused on why they are redoing the tiger statue. “I actually liked the tiger statue when it was orange, It just doesn’t make sense to me for it to be yellow like the one by the field.” Destiny Borrelli, Sophomore at Joliet west states, when asked about how she feels about the tiger statue being changed. According to Assistant principal Marcum, “The statue that was refurbished in front of the auditorium needed some attention due to its age. The decision to refurbish this Tiger statue was made at the same time the new Tiger Statue was being designed out by the Football Stadium, which is why the design and colors are the same as that statue.” The original tiger statue (the one by the auditorium) was donated by the class 1969. The reason why the tiger statue had a recent rededication was in honor of the class 1969’s 55th anniversary. To the West community these tiger statues represent the class of 1969, one of the first classes to who finished their full 4 years at Joliet west. The Tiger is our school mascot and helps to establish the identity of our school. How are assistant principal feels about this change? “ I think that the state of the statue prior to the refurbishment made it very necessary for some work to be done. The colors had faded over the past 55 years and some of the teeth had been damaged. The current state of the statue is definitely an improvement over where it was before the artist made his repairs.” That is one of many changes happening at Joliet West.
