Should the school wifi passwords be shared with students? Discussion about sharing the wifi password has been a trending discussion in Joliet West for a while now.
Most students’ wifi doesn’t work in the school so sharing the wifi password would benefit them entirely. The only question is, should the wifi actually be shared with the students?
Several students shared how they felt about this. Junior, Natalie Quiroz says, “The wifi password should be shared with students because there are things we need on our phones that we can’t access on our computers, and what if we need to message our parents incase of an emergency and can’t because our phones don’t work.”
Junior Antonice Anderson states, “Giving the students the wifi passwords can let us have access to things we can’t get to on our laptops like contacting our parents.”
When asking and interviewing different students they all had most of the same statements that it should be shared school-wide with students and staff.
Very few students thought sharing the wifi would be negative, but some were neutral. One such student is Senior Isabella Montero who said, “ Sharing the school wifi password would have many benefits and many downsides such as the students could send texts to their parents and they would go through especially in emergencies, along with if they forgot their computers they could participate more, but a downside would be that students often take advantage of the classes they have wifi in being on their phones the whole class rather than working on assignments or getting done work”.
Overall, most students would definitely appreciate having access to school wifi. Maybe in future years the wifi will be available to students, but for now we’ll have to use our phones data.
