On October 1, 2023, the U.S government was dangerously near a shutdown. The House of Representatives passed a short term spending measure on Saturday. Under the Constitution , Congress exercises the power to pass legislation bills each year to fund the government. There are 12 bills. A government shutdown is when congress fails to enact the 12 annual appropriation bills, federal agencies must cease all non essential functions until Congress acts.
More so, since Russia’s sudden invasion of Ukraine, the U.S has sent billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine which includes, Abrams battle tanks, anti-aircraft missiles, coastal defense ships, and advanced surveillance and radar systems, and many Americans can’t seem to understand why the U.S government is going through such great lengths to help Ukraine. According to the Department of Justice, “Security assistance for Ukraine is a smart investment in our national security. It helps to prevent a larger conflict in the region and deter potential aggression elsewhere….” It is most definitely fair to say that the U.S will continue to fight for Ukraine during one of the most devastating times of their history. Many government officials have shared their views on the fact that the government has sent billions in aid to Ukraine, here is what former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has to say, “Where is the accountability on the money we already spent? What is the plan for victory? I think that’s what the American public wants to know.” Recently McCarthy has been removed from his role as Speaker of the House. Many officials claim that Mccarthy’s has at one point or another said things that he never really lived up to, and that he fought for change that he really didn’t live up to. A Wall Street Journal poll in August found that 62% of Republican voters thought the U.S was doing far too much for Ukraine. Voting in the House has left House Republicans voting to strip $300 million from a defense spending bill to train Ukrainian soldiers and purchase weapons.
Despite all of this, President Biden has kept his views clear, “The vast majority of both parties — Democrats and Republicans, Senate and House — support helping Ukraine and the brutal aggression that is being thrust upon them by Russia, stop playing games, get this done.″
